A: Usually no, you do not have to upgrade unless you are getting Status 7 or other errors while installing a custom ROM.

Download Android 5.0 Lollipop Gapps!

For those of you installing Android 5.0 Lollipop custom ROMs, you may need to install Gapps separately in order to get Google apps like Google Play Store, GMail, etc…etc…

To install Gapps, simply reboot into CWM or TWRP recovery and install using the “install from sdcard” or “install” option, just like installing a new ROM.  Do not wipe, simply install over your current ROM if it’s missing Play Store.
Android 5.0 Lollipop Gapps include main Google apps like Gmail, Hangouts, Google Maps, Google Music, Google Play Games, Google Plus, Street View, Google Videos, YouTube, Google Now Launcher, and FaceLock Base Required Google Services.
You can also easily uninstall any apps you don’t want after installing Gapps using the Play Store.
*Note – If you get not sufficient storage error, use the micro gapps version, otherwise use standard.
